BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

The conference focuses on the interface between accounting innovations and developments in manufacturing and operations. We seek to be a forum where researchers from various disciplines meet—such as accounting, production and operations management, new product development, marketing, and strategy—to explore the adoption of performance measurement and cost management in their respective fields.

The Twente 2003 conference continues the theme established in the highly successful conferences held in Eindhoven (1993), Bruges (1995), Edinburgh (1997), Kolding (1999), and Pisa (2001).

The organisers will recommend selected papers to Management Accounting Research although they will subsequently undergo the normal reviewing procedures.

PRACTICALITIES

LOCATION

The conference will take place at the University of Twente in the Netherlands.

Twente is a region located in the Eastern part of the Netherlands, near the border with Germany. Twente University was founded as a university of technology in 1961 in order to increase the number of academic (university) engineers. The university campus is situated on the beautiful Drienerlo estate, between the two cities of Enschede and Hengelo. Modelled on the Anglo-Saxon example, the UT is the only real campus university in the Netherlands. While the landscape of Twente in general is renowned for its beauty, the UT campus must be the loveliest 146 ha of the whole region. An old park, embellished with modern architecture, forms a unique environment for student life, sports and study.

HOW TO REACH THE UNIVERSITY OF TWENTE ?

The university is in the town of Enschede.

Fly to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport and take the train to Enschede. It is a very easy connection to Enschede that leaves from the airport and takes 2 hours and 9 minutes. There are two trains every hour :

* At 23 minutes past the hour: take the train in the direction of Groningen/Leeuwarden, change trains in Amersfoort (your train is on the other side of the platform) towards Enschede.
* At 53 minutes past the hour: take the direct train in the direction of Enschede.

Cost: single fare, first class € 32.30, second class € 20.20

If you stay in Hotel De Broeierd (next to the Campus), or in Hengelo, you can also get off at Hengelo, one stop before Enschede.

You can also fly to Münster Osnabrück Airport in Germany (www.fmo.de). Rent a car to continue to Enschede, which takes about one hour. Taking a bus to either Münster or Osnabrück and then a train to Enschede takes at least two hours.
