Product development management has become an established area of research in the management field. We have been able to establish professional journals, associations, and conferences as well as other networks. This conference marks a jubilee since it is the 10th conference since it started in Brussels in 1992.
The purpose of the conference is to deal with all challenges in management of product development. New practices open up exciting research avenues for scholars of Product Development Management. Our hope is to bring together all the relevant research directed to these challenges.
High rates of innovation and dramatically reduced product development lead and cycle times have been shaking both practitioners and researchers of product development management. An array of ideas have been introduced under various labels: "cross-functional teams", "overlapping activities", "design for manufacturability", "concept to customer", "computer aided engineering", "black-box engineering", “platforms”, "networked development", and “knowledge management” are just some such labels.
Such concepts have created new challenges to the organization and management of the technical functions in the firm. The practitioners have discovered that implementing these new ideas requires deep and far-reaching changes in the product development organization and systems as well as in the interfaces with other functions and external organizations. The academics, similarly have found that some of the underlying theories must be reconsidered and new models developed in the light of fundamental changes in practice.
Product development plays an increasingly important role in the corporation in competing through technology and customization. Therefore the product development and engineering functions have an active role to play and must step out of their traditional place as a somewhat isolated expert organization. Thus, the product development organization is more directly exposed to the competitive forces facing the business and more directly involved in the strategic development process in the firm. Therefore the product development function will continue to enjoy more attention by management. The traditional boundaries of the function have changed beyond recognition being increasingly complex and new forms of relations and direct integration have developed. Strong and continuous efforts have been done to reduce time to market, to implement cross-functional teams and to support project leaders. Co-development with suppliers and extended industrial networks are on the agenda of many companies. During the same period, we have also witnessed the strong development of the “soft” area with IT both as products and integrated with traditional products as well as the development of IT infrastructures for PD.
These trends have opened exciting research avenues for scholars of product development management and pose significant management challenges. All these fields have been addressed in previous IPDM conferences and are well-established research areas where progress has to be maintained and reported. The purpose of the conference is to bring together and to reflect on all relevant research related to these new challenges as well as to traditional issues of the field.
Who should attend
The conference is an opportunity for researchers of different backgrounds to update and exchange views. It is primarily aimed at those who are engaged in research on New Product Development from a broad managerial perspective. The conference is also aimed at those who take a more disciplinary point of view and are interested in broadening the scope of their research. Although participants are encouraged to present results of their own work, this is not a requirement for attendance and active participation.
The conference will provide ample opportunities for both formal and informal discussions of the results presented, as well as for discussions about future international and interdisciplinary research co-operation.

| PAPER REQUIREMENTS AND BEST PAPER |
The final paper must be received by April 18th, 2003 ( at EIASM) in order to be included in the Proceedings book and in the conference programme.
Authors are requested to follow the guidelines(+ sample) for the presentation of their paper. Papers must fulfill the following requirements: 1. The theoretical base must be made clear, and references to already-existing research in the field must be made explicit. 2. Priority is given to research which has an empirical basis. This means that conceptual discussions without empirical tests or basis will only exceptionally be accepted. 3. The focus of the conference is on management issues, so we request that papers include managerial implications. To help the selection process, please clearly indicate in the extended abstract: the purpose of the paper, its reference to existing literature, the research method and empirical base, and the results and managerial implications.
Best paper award
The organizing committee will select one best paper out of the submitted papers. The author(s) will receive an award during the closing session of the conference.
Publication of papers
The organising committee will encourage selected authors to submit their papers for review to the Journal of Product Innovation Management. A special issue is planned for publication in 2004.
