The research center is the result of a governmental initiative on how management, organization and competence (in Danish ledelse, organisation og kompetence = LOK) can be promoted in Danish enterprises with a special view to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
The European Council for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (ECSB) is a non-profit organization whose main objective is to advance the understanding of entrepreneurship and to improve the competitiveness of SMEs in Europe. ECSB facilitates the creation and distribution of new knowledge through research, education and the open exchange of ideas between professions and across national and cultural boarders. ECSB provides its members access to high-quality conferences, such as the RENT conference, in order to facilitate and enhance the exchange of knowledge within the ECSB membership.

After the seventeen previous Workshops (in Brussels 1987, Vienna 1988, Cologne 1989, Durham 1990, Växjö 1991, Barcelona 1992, Budapest 1993, Tampere 1994, Piacenza 1995, Brussels 1996, Mannheim 1997, Lyon 1998, London 1999, Prague 2000, Turku 2001,Barcelona 2002, Lodz, 2003) the RENT 2004 conference will take place in Copenhagen. It will be hosted by the LOK Research Center (www.lok.cbs.dk) created as a collaboration between the Aalborg University, the Business Schools in Aarhus and Copenhagen and University of Southern Denmark. The Business School in Copenhagen will host the conference The field of entrepreneurship and small business studies has prospered and grown considerably during the past few years in all European countries. Remarkable development has taken place in the research frameworks and methodologies respectively. The fundamental scientific discussion continues with entrepreneurship theory and discipline. Simultaneously we have witnessed entrepreneurship research enter into new emerging fields with specific features. Progress in the field of entrepreneurship is not only triggered by the exchange of ideas and new analyses inside the research community. It is also triggered by the growing emphasis on entrepreneurship in policy agendas and business communities all over Europe. It has stimulated dialogue between the research community and communities of practice.
