BACKGROUND

After the eighteen previous Workshops (in Brussels 1987, Vienna 1988, Cologne 1989, Durham 1990, Vaxjo 1991, Barcelona 1992, Budapest 1993, Tampere 1994, Piacenza 1995, Brussels 1996, Mannheim 1997, Lyon 1998, London 1999, Prague 2000, Turku 2001, Barcelona 2002, Lodz 2003, Copenhagen 2004) the RENT 2005 conference will take place in Napoli (Italy). The University of Napoli Federico II will host it.

In line with traditions, RENT XIX will be organised in order to stimulate dialogue and reflections on progress in the field of entrepreneurship. However, the organisers also want to take the opportunity to promote dialogue on theory and practice in entrepreneurship and small business between the community of researchers and consultants serving policy bodies in the European Community and the European nations.

The field of entrepreneurship and small business studies has prospered and grown considerably during the past few years in all European countries. Remarkable development has taken place in the research frameworks and methodologies respectively. The fundamental scientific discussion continues with entrepreneurship theory and discipline. Simultaneously we have witnessed entrepreneurship research enter into new emerging fields with specific features.
Progress in the field of entrepreneurship is not only triggered by the exchange of ideas and new analyses inside the research community. It is also triggered by the growing emphasis on entrepreneurship in policy agendas and business communities all over Europe. It has stimulated dialogue between the research community and communities of practice.
